Sjogren’s Syndrome

Lupus, Scleroderma and Sjogren’s Support Group
Sjogren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disease. The cause in not known. Diagnosis is made by clinical observation. Tear flow tests and lip biopsy may be taken.

Sjogren’s may occur in primary and secondary form:

* Primary Sjogren’s Syndrome initially shows as dry eyes and dry mouth. It can also cause inflammation in the heart, lungs and kidneys. Fatigue is a problem.
* Secondary Sjogren’s Syndrome is dry eyes and dry mouth in conjunction with another autoimmune disease viz. Rheumatoid Arthritis, Scleroderma or Lupus.

There is no cure. Symptoms are treated. Frequent sips of water and the use of artificial saliva may relieve dry mouth. Artificial tear products can help dry eyes. Dry and dusty environments should be avoided.
