Providing Effective Bereavement Support

When working with grieving people it is important to recognise and understand normative grief reactions. Grief counselling is a specialised area which requires a toolkit of responses and strategies which can be tailored to each individual’s needs. This program will identify a range of responses appropriate for grieving people across the lifespan.

Designed for

Professionals involved in the care and support of bereaved people including nurses, counsellors, doctors, social workers, teachers, clergy, volunteers, teachers and youth workers. Those with a basic understanding of counselling practice.

Learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • be aware of common grief responses
  • recognise the needs of grieving people
  • identify and implement effective strategies to support grieving individuals.

Self-Care Through Mindfulness Practices in Bereavement Work

Presenter: Paulina Sculli

This seminar will introduce participants to a contemporary understanding of self-care in bereavement work and the way in which compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma can affect individuals both personally, in their daily life, and professionally, in their work with clients.

Through lecture and discussion, the workshop will explore the meaning of compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma, the predisposing factors, the causes, and the signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. Participants will also be introduced to current thinking about how to avoid compassion fatigue in clinical practice through mindfulness related strategies.

Designed for

Professionals including welfare officers, guidance officers, counsellors, psychologists, social workers, pastoral care workers, chaplains and clergy and those working with people who are experiencing grief.

Learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • recognise the range of symptoms of compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma
  • discuss the current thinking around compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma
  • identify personal and professional strategies for managing compassion fatigue.

Living Hope Suicide Bereavement Training Program

The Living Hope Suicide Bereavement Training Program is designed to raise the knowledge and confidence of people who support and care for those bereaved by suicide. The training is designed for workers, volunteers and the general public.

Living Hope is a comprehensive program which covers all aspects of suicide bereavement from practical matters to be attended to following the death of a loved one, the grieving process, aspects of spirituality, the influence and impact of culture on grieving, understanding emotions and a host of helpful information which aims to equip potential care givers to support individuals and families through the devastating experience of losing a loved one.
