Challenging Behaviours Workshop
Child Behaviour Problems: School & Family
Behavioural difficulties in early childhood often go unnoticed until the child attends school where they must socialize with other children, are under the scrutiny of more adults and are required to navigate the different boundaries and structure of the school environment. As behavioural problems become more pronounced bullying may also occur.
Powell and Ladd (2010) conducted a review of the literature around bullying and its relation to family systemic theory and practices. The origins of bullying and victimisation are best explained by Social Learning Theory with reinforcement of aggressive behaviours and witnessing domestic violence and Attachment Theory with insecure attachments related to bullying and aggressive behaviour. Good outcomes are achieved with family therapy by reducing family conflict and increasing positive communication and relationships.
