Arnold Cielens, disability advocate and champion, has died on July 7th 2009, aged 87. This tireless advocate for deaf/blind people has fought his last campaign.
Arnold was born in Riga Latvia in 1921. His father also suffered from hereditary glaucoma, a disease which has marked his life. He spent his early years in farm life, looking after his disabled father.
During his youth, he moved to Sweden and became a refugee after the WWII years where two sons, Martin and Viesturs were born before migrating to Australia in 1951.
The Cielens family grew to four boys while the family struggled to learn English and adapt to the new country. Arnold began his charity collecting quite early in his time in Australia as he increased his English.
He went on to belong to all major disability/charity/NGOs of the 1980s to 2000s and became a regular fixture at AGMs with persistent questions raised from a consumer point of view. He was active from IYDP 1981 until his death in trying to secure better services for those who are blind. His charity collecting for Red Cross raised over $140,000.
Arnold never stopped writing to politicians or advocating for people who fall between the cracks. He is the last of a group of early pioneers with disability who saw that it was their responsibility to advocate for those with weaker voices.
Arnold is survived by his partner Val and sons Martin, Viesturs and Andy.
Vale Arnold Cielens, a man who never stopped speaking out on behalf of others less fortunate.
See The Advertiser for notice of a Memorial Service.
