Smart in Business – Arts skill training for disabled artists

If you are a disabled artist, arts worker, volunteer, someone who works within communities or someone who would like to, this course is for you.

The Disability and Arts Transition Team (DATT) and the Community Arts Network of SA Inc. (CAN SA) invite disabled artists and arts-workers to join in training that contributes to a Course in Business Skills for Creative People (Code 40594SA).

The modules The People Factor (CUTPH08B) and Plan and Program Events (CVPPE06B) will be offered over three days (2, 3 and 8 November 2011) between 10am and 4pm each day. Workshops are hands on, practical and designed to be relevant to participants.

DATT is able to support participants further by offering each module for a fee of only $25/module (usually a module can cost up to $150). Undertaking both the modules offered will cost $50.

Only 12 places are available SO BE QUICK AND REGISTER!

OzAsia Moon Lantern Festival Parade Audio Described

12 September 2011, 4.30pm-8.30pm

The Disability and Arts Transition Team are providing audio description services at the OzAsia Moon Lantern Festival Parade!

DATT is making Audio Description available to enhance the experience of the popular OzAsia Moon Lantern Festival Parade for audiences who are blind or vision impaired.

Receivers and headsets will be available for loan from DATT volunteers at the Audio Description stall (adjacent to the cooking demonstrations) in Elder Park between 4.30pm and 5.30pm on Monday 12 September.

To borrow a headset, patrons will be asked to leave photo ID and a valid credit card or $50 as a deposit on the day.

Be a part of this Australian-first initiative.

Headsets are limited so please reserve a unit by calling DATT on (08) 8231 0900 (daily, 9am – 5pm) before 2.00pm on Monday 12 September.

DELVE

DATT is pleased to announce DELVE, a two day contemporary arts based workshop and event by and for disabled and Deaf artists scheduled for 15 & 16 April 2011.

DELVE will provide a structured period of intense creative activity experimenting across different digital media platforms, provoking new ideas and participation in expansive dialogues. Visiting interstate Artists, Daniel Kojta, Alexandra Beasley and Sofya Gollan will lead the workshops and discussion forums. Participants will be engaged in dialogue, art skills development, collaborative practice, advocacy, and self-generating networks.

DELVE will offer a chance for all participants and facilitators to discuss topics such as, what is Disability Arts, what is Deaf Arts, do we need Disability Arts, what role does identity politics play, models of disability, and utilisation of new media.

Applications for the limited places will be available shortly. A public screening of works by disabled and Deaf Artists along with a forum exploring disability and identity expression will be held on the evening of Friday 15 April. Please mark this date in your diary.

Salon de Dance and The Feast of Argentina Gina Catalina

Thanks to the Feast Festival, DATT (the Disability and Arts Transition Team) is delighted to offer our members half-price tickets to ‘Salon de Dance‘! Featuring performers of The Burlesque Hour and No Strings Attached performers Rachel High and Emma J Hawkins (directed by Maude Davey). The DAT Team was delighted to attend Wednesdays performance of Salon de Dance, and we simply cannot recommend this wild show highly enough. Maude Davey presents her second workshop for Deaf and disabled women. This workshop requires absolutely no prior experience. Those who attended the first workshop are welcome to attend this one.

There are 15 places only. Please contact DATT to discuss your access requirements. An Auslan Interpreter will be arranged given prior notice. Running time is 3 hours with rest times. Cost $10 each. Further information will be given to those who want to attend.

A workshop to bring together disabled and Deaf, freelance and independent, artists and arts workers practicing across all art forms to talk about how to:

  • build arts and disability communities and networks
  • best support you to develop your arts practice and skills
  • advocate and promote arts and disability to the wider communities

The workshop will run for three hours with two drink and snack breaks.

About Julie McNamara

Julie McNamara is a Disabled artist and activist based in London. She creates disability-led theatre and multi-media performance art that provokes, and entertains. Her creative work shines a light on the darkest parts of our psyche, working with extraordinary voices in the margins of our communities. With imaginative and innovative storytelling she breaks down barriers, invites new insights, promoting a world where difference is a celebration!

Julie gained the DaDa Writer’s Award 2009 and this year’s South Bank Show Diversity Award 2010 for her production:Crossings. She previously toured Pig Tales internationally. The show featured as a highlight at the 2006 Art of Difference conference in Melbourne, Victoria. She has since worked closely with Adelaide artist Rachel High of No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability. Check her out at www.juliemc.com

About Caglar Kimyoncu

Caglar Kimyoncu is the Artistic Director of Filmpro, based in the heart of Hoxton’s alternative arts scene, London. Previously the Director of London Disability Film Festival which he created alongside Julie, he continues to work as an international consultant in Disability and Film. His work has appeared in numerous exhibitions and is currently part of the Adam Reynolds Bursary finalists at Shape Arts, London. Caglar has worked in collaboration with Julie for 12 years. They are here in Adelaide working on a documentary.
