DIRC Disability Forums: Families and Mental Health

The next DIRC Disability Forum will be held on Thursday 6th October from 10.30am to 12.20pm.

The topic for the forum will be Families and Mental Health. The forum will be presented by Cindy Eggington BAppSc (Dis) (Hons).

Every day 330 Australians with serious mental illnesses are turned away from Emergency Departments, 1,200 Australians are refused admission to a public or private psychiatric unit. Every day more than 7 people die as a result of a suicide, and more than a third of those have been discharged too early or without care from hospitals.

DIRC Disability Forums: Universal Design – Applications in everyday life

The next DIRC Disability Forum will be held on Thursday September 1st and is titled “Universal Design – Applications in everyday life”. The forum will be presented by David Hobbs BSc, BSc/BEng (Biomedical)(Hons).

David has degrees in Physics and Biomedical Engineering and more than 10 years’ experience working as a Rehabilitation Engineer in the field of Assistive Technology and disability. Since 2004 David has been teaching Universal Design to students at Flinders University, to develop awareness of the field and to highlight how designers can positively affect usability and accessibility through good design.

The next DIRC Disability Forum is being held on Thursday August 4th and is titled Disability: A 40 year professional and personal journey.

The forum will be presented by Dr. Brian Matthews, an individual with nearly 40 years experience working with disability, and currently Head of the Disability and Community Inclusion Unit at Flinders University. Dr. Matthews will share some of the experiences and knowledge he has gained over the years.

DIRC Disability Forums: Post School Options

The next DIRC Disability Forum is coming up on Thursday June 2nd and is titled Post School Options.

What do people with disabilities do when they finish school? The transition of children from school to adulthood is one of those areas where decisions often need to be made in a hurry.

What are the options available? Work, day options – are there others?

A panel will be present to answer your questions including Ted Evans from Community Connect, Monica Leahy the National Disability Coordination Officer, and others.
