Nonviolent Resistance Workshop

Bower Place will be presenting a workshop titled Nonviolent Resistance Revisited as a part of their 2010 workshop series.

From Bower Place:

“The philosophy of Nonviolent Resistance empowers parents, raises parent-teacher presence & works collaboratively with extended family, friends, community, school & professional systems to establish structures for non-violent leadership, responsibility & authority. Bower Place has extended the use of Nonviolent Resistance (NVR) to address the anger & aggression that masks the deeper needs of children.”

This workshop is presented by Malcolm Robinson, Social Worker & Catherine Sanders, Psychologist, both Directors of Bower Place.

Western Area Autism Parent Group

The Western Autism Parents Group are holding their next meeting on Monday 1st March at Garden Cottage located in the Bower Cottages Community Centre on Bower Road at Ethelton (Bower Cottages are on the left if you are coming from the Port Road end, just after you cross the Port River. There’s a car park at the rear which you can enter from the side street).

The meeting starts at 7.30p.m.

Sam Powrie will talk about selecting vocabulary for language programmes, and explain something about Gail van Tatenhove’s ‘PIXON’ vocabulary lists, which seek to support the development of both understanding and expression.

Jean-Marie, a parent of a child with ASD will also be talking about and demonstrating the ‘Interactive Desk’ he has built for his son’s learning programme at home.

Young Parents Retreat Weekends

Edmund Rice Camps will be holding two Young Parents Retreat Weekends in 2010. These camps are aimed at providing respite for Young Parents and those expecting a baby.

There will be activities aimed at strengthening the family unit as well as opportunities for parents to be alone while volunteers entertain the children in a safe and nurturing environment.

Criteria

  • Parents must be under 20 years of age
  • Parents must be on Centrelink payment and/or eligible for a Commonwealth Health Care Card

Dates

  • 12th – 14th March 2010
  • 25th – 27th June 2010

Positive Partnerships Programme (Autism Training)

A positive partnerships workshop will be run in Port Adelaide on the 9th and 10th of June. There is no location yet and registrations do not open until 6 weeks before the workshop.

These are national workshops for parents and cover a range of topics relating to children with ASD and attending school. It is open for all parents who have either a school age child or a child at kindergarten.

If you are a parent/carer of a school aged child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), there is a national program of workshops and information sessions available to help you work in partnership with your child’s school to improve their learning outcomes.

Call for Expressions of Interest

A  NATIONAL voice for families

MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL

Expressions of interest are invited from parents, families and carers interested in exercising a leadership role on the National Council of the National Federation of Parents Families and Carers.

This National Council is the key policy-making body for the Federation. The Federation has an ambitious agenda for 2010 in creating a national voice for families in public life, with campaigns in health, education, social support and privacy legislation reform. Additional members of the Council are sought to help drive this agenda.

The Federation’s interests cover many areas which are usually treated as segmented fields. Expressions of interest are invited from people who have strong interests in at least some of the following areas:

  • Early years
    ·         Child care
    ·         Education and school
    ·         Work and family
    ·         Stay-at-home supports
    ·      Disability
    ·      Mental illness
    ·      Learning difficulties
    ·      Behavioural issues
    ·      Youth support
    ·      Alcohol and drug issues
    ·      Sole and separated parents
    ·         Blended and step families
    ·         Chronic and acute illness
    ·         Senior years

Expressions of interest should include:

Personal and professional history (please attach a CV).
Previous and current involvements in advocacy on family and family member issues.
Evidence of skills in advocacy, initiative-taking, public speaking, community organisation or policy work.
Names and contact details for two referees.

Applicants should be capable in using online communications, since membership of this Council is dispersed around Australia.

Michele Toner
Originally training and working as a high school teacher, Michele was awarded a
Master of Special Education Degree with Honours in 2001, and won the University of WA’s prize
for Best Research in Special Education PhD – ADHD Educational Consultant and Life Coach WA

Mark Brandtman
Educational Consultant NSW. Supporting schools as well as to parents and school
students with the effective management of A.D/H.D. Mark is a co publisher of Research with the University of Western Australia on Time Management in AD/HD Children and Adults presented at the World Federation of ADHD’s Conference in Vienna Austria in 2009.

Leonie Cecich
Professional Music Development WA She is a Primary School Music Specialist
(B.Ed) and is the director of Kids ‘n’ Music. She is also the composer and author of the “You Gotta Get Up” series Leonie was awarded the National Award for Excellence in School Music Education in 2008.

Geraldine Moore
Experienced Mother & Author.  She was a secondary teacher [B.A. M. Ed]. More recently, she has been working in a voluntary capacity to support community understanding of ADHD. In 2005, after her boys had grown up, Geraldine published a book entitled “ADHD potatoes: A Journey from Darkness Into Light”. Geraldine is also a trained youth mentor.
