Accessible, empowering and enjoyable, drumming with your hands is a fun and liberating way to express yourself. Drawing on traditional African rhythms which go back to the dawn of civilization, this workshop is for people with a sense of rhythm who wish to express themselves musically.
While people with experience in drumming are encouraged to attend, the workshops will introduce beginners to the basic sounds that can be drawn from a drum with your hands and will teach structured rhythms which everyone can play. For those who might not be able to hold and play a drum with both hands, there are a number of bells, shakers and rattles that can be incorporated into the rhythms to form a rich and exciting sound.
Starting with simple, easy to grasp rhythms, the SoundWaves Drumming Workshops will develop small drumming ensembles which will be invited to play on stage at our monthly SoundWaves Events.
SoundWaves Workshops are free. Drums and other percussion instruments will be provided but participants are encouraged to bring their own if they have them.
The first SoundWaves Drumming Workshop will be held at the Folk Centre, corner of South Road and George Street, Thebarton, on Thursday 3rd February from 11am till 1pm, and the first Thursday in the month from then onwards.
